Travel Sauce: Antique rugs have always been a part of my life and were one of my favorite parts of my home growing up. My mom has great taste in rugs and after law school I started to search for antique rugs that I could have in my own home. The tricky thing with old rugs is that most of the time the predominant color is red and that is, unfortunately, my least favorite color! Also, the traditional antique rug-buying experience can be intimidating if you are not extremely knowledgeable in this area (more on that later).
Fast forward to a few years ago (before I even started Room Sauce) when I noticed a great rug that my friend Kait had in her home. I asked her where she got the rug and she told me about Kelly Love, who runs an Instagram-only antique rug store called Broomhill Antique Rugs. Growing up I went with my mom to Maryland rug warehouses (predominantly run by men) where there were intimidating massive stacks of rugs everywhere. I think part of the reason that I didn’t buy old rugs myself until a few years ago was that I didn’t love those shopping experiences growing up and was overwhelmed by the selection at traditional rug dealers. I had yet to find a dealer who had rugs that I loved and a selection that I trusted. How would I know if it was a fake? Why didn’t any of the rugs come in colors that I wanted in a price range that I could afford?
Enter Kelly. Over the past few years, Kelly and I got to know each other over Instagram and I grew to trust her taste and knowledge about rugs. Rather than buy rugs from random sellers, I have found it much better to work with one seller that I trust, who has an incredible selection. Below are the three rugs that I have from Kelly to date and I love them SO much. As you can see, I have thing for Soumaks! Not only have I been able to get great rugs by working with Kelly, but is a joy to work with other female entrepreneurs and support their businesses.
At Home with Kelly Love
When my Mom and I decided to go to London on a short trip, I reached out to Kelly and asked if she wanted to meet for coffee. She graciously invited us to her home and it ended up being the highlight of our trip. Kelly and her boyfriend live in a peaceful neighborhood in London outside the center of the city. Walking up her beautifully tiled front steps surrounded by greenery, I immediately felt calmer and when I walked into her entryway I could tell that this was a special home.
Kelly and I have been friends online for several years, but we hit it off immediately in person. I instantly started gushing over ever detail of her home (those who know me well know that I don’t gush or give praise lightly hah) and she took my Mom and I on a tour. Kelly and her boyfriend gut renovated this house and from what I have heard about the “before” state of the home - this was QUITE the transformation. There was clearly so much thought and care that they put into every decor and renovation decision.
In addition to being a fashion designer and rug guru, Kelly is also a very talented baker. She made us this cake and it was as delicious as it looks.
I could tell that Kelly and I were meant to be friends, because one of the first things that she said to me was - “You should feel free to take photos if you want!” UM, YES PLEASE. We didn’t plan to have a photoshoot - these are just organic shots that I snapped in Kelly’s home when I was there for the morning. I hope that you enjoy these photos of Kelly’s home because I had the best time capturing this very special place.
We spent a wonderful morning chatting about all things design, home renovation, and of course…rugs! Getting to see some of Kelly’s amazing rugs in person was a joy! She has the most incredible selection and I can’t wait to share the ones that I ended up finding for our new Brooklyn home.
It was sad to leave, but what a great experience. If you love rugs, I can’t recommend Kelly’s selection enough and she is just wonderful to work with. Kelly, please come to Brooklyn soon so that we can host you and thank you again for having us in your beautiful home!
